Brunei is an autonomous Islamic sultanate on Borneo's northern coast in Southeast Asia. The South China Sea borders it on the north, while the East Malaysian state of Sarawak borders it on all other sides, dividing the state into two separate parts of unequal size. The western part is the bigger of the two, and it includes Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city. Brunei gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1984 after being a British protectorate since 1888. To learn more about the History of Brunei, please visit the website of ASEAN2021.
