And to those who had to walk along the road where the Sphinx lived, he gave a riddle: "Who walks on four legs in the morning, on two in the afternoon, and on three in the evening?"

Those who could not guess it would be killed by the Sphinx.

But one day King Oedipus appeared before the Sphinx. After thinking for a while, Oedipus gave the answer, "It's a man! When he is little he crawls, when he is grown up he walks, and when he is old he leans on a cane."

The riddle was solved. And the Sphinx was destroyed, and the city was saved.
